So my husband got a letter
by Lost his mind inso, he received a letter that i am wondering if it is one of those open letters that are out there to denote time given.
it starts out with the name of the person sending it, then goes into the spiel...do you know our god's name?
when i was shown what it is, i kind of got upset.

"Wasn't he called 'El' (pronounced Ale) before Yahweh?"
Yes, of course. That's why JWs and many others call their buildings 'Bethel' = The House of God.

An excellent programme, utterly believable. I think it may have been a repeat. Oral and anal sex were mentioned, which is not common for a BBC R4 morning programme. Recommended.

The 1914 doctrine: How long it will last?
by opusdei1972 inone hundred years have passed and the society still supports this lie, which of course, is the basis of their other lies, like that of the unfaithful and not discreet slave appointed in 1919. however, i wonder, what will happen after 50 years, when the overlapped generation will pass?.
and if you want, what will happen with this religion in 2100?, could it survive with the same lie??
?.

I never was a JW, but I have a view about this.
'Distance lends enchantment'.
Paul had a vision, which led him to his view of Xianity, which became orthodox. Mohammed had his vision, which became orthodox. Joseph Smith propounded his visions, which became orthodox mormonism. Millerites had their view, Russell had his view, etc. etc. which disappeared back into the mists of time. They were either accepted or forgotten.
'1914' is, I think, (perhaps consciously by the GB) being forgotten and disappearing into the mists of time. How often is Russell referred to now in JW writings?
It will pass, no doubt, and modern JW writers will consign it to (uncomfortable) history. Those raking it up will be accused of apostacy.

If anyone claimed that god speaks to them personally.....
by jambon1 inthey'd be viewed as completely mentally ill and laughed at.. so, how do the governing body get away with it?.

Re. the OP.
Many of the world's religions are based on people claiming that their god appeared/spoke to them. Judaism, Xianity (Paul), Islam, Mormons (Smith) and JWs (Russell) and others.
'Distance lends enchantment' - or, in other words, leave it long enough and the passage of time will blunt, obscure or forgive the obvious (to our modern minds) craziness.
Ask yourself this - if Joseph Smith or Charles Taze Russell was around today and spouting their nonsense how successful would they be?
(Yes, I know you could cite Hubbard and Scientology but there will always be some crazies off the scale).

Off On A Trip - But Little Enthusiam
by Joe Grundy innever was a jw, but been here a long time.. off on a trip in a week or so, uk to andorra to stay with a friend for 10 days or so (beautiful place) then a week or so wending through france back home.. did the same trip the last couple of years -it was wonderful.
met some lovely people, including an ex-polce woman over coffees and calvados after dinner.. but ... i don't feel so enthusiastic about this trip.
i'll visit the cathar sites and other places.. maybe- just maybe - i've come to the conclusion that these trips are not as much fun if you don't have a companion to share it with..

dubstepped:
Thanks. The way I look at it, I'm going over anyway, travelling on my own and I have three spare seats which are unoccupied.
Maybe someone fancies/needs a trip - and because I'm travelling from West Wales I can pick up/drop anywhere along that corridor in UK, and drop off/pick almost anywhere in France (I'll be going over into Belgium for a tobacco shop) and because my time is my own I'm very flexible - it just seems to me the right thing to do to offer the spare seats to anyone interested.
We shall see.

I love 'trundling through' the Cathar region - Albi and environs. I'll do my best with photos (but am not so good with this) .

OK, just spoke to the friend I'm visiting in Andorra. Made plans to drink some beers, etc., so I'm revitalised.
My offer is still open, though. A crossing through to Dieppe and back, a ride down to the Pyrenees and back, at no cost. I'm going anyway, so may as well offer up my spare seats.
Leave Newhaven 2330 23/8/16. Return from Dieppe 1800 8/9/16.
I'm from West Wales, so no problem in collection on the way.

Blondie:
" Could be traveling with a selfish whiner, alone is better."
You're absolutely right. I enjoy driving, especially along the back roads in France. The car is comfortable (a Jag) and the time is my own.
Actually, I enjoy being on my own (esp. after being married to my Filipina ex-wife #2) and appreciate the freedom to go where and when I want.
